Sewing Machine Review - Juki TL 2010Q

300button

Sorry it's been so long since I posted a sewing machine review! Time just RAN away on me! Today we have a review by Marti of 52 Quilts in 52 Weeks

Over to you Marti:

Please share the brand name and model number:

Juki TL 2010Q

Juki TL 2101Q

Is your machine classed as Domestic or Industrial?

Industrial, although becoming very popular with quilters for domestic use

How long have you had this machine, did you buy it new and what was the purchase price or approximate price range?

I've had my machine for two years. I bought it new from a shop in Denver that had used it as a demo at the Denver Quilt Expo. Because it was considered a "floor model," I got a really good price -- less than $1000.

What made you decide to buy this particular machine?

I decided to buy a Juki 2010 because I'd seen a review by a blogger who raved about the speed of this machine. 1500 stitches per minute!

Approximately how often do you sew with it and what types of projects do you sew?

This machine is a straight-stitch only machine, so I use it almost exclusively for piecing. I also use it to attach binding using my Susie's Magic Binding technique.

Susie's Magic Binding Tut

I have used for straight-line quilting with the walking foot. It works great for this, but I prefer to use my Viking Mega-Quilter for quilting.

Does your machine have any special features which you enjoy or any special features you do NOT like and drives you bonkers? LOL

The Juki has an automatic needle threader which I never use. The needle threader only works with a size 14 needle and I like to use a finer needle for piecing, so I don't bother with the automatic needle threader.

Are there any features you really wish your machine has BUT is lacking?

Because this machine was designed specifically for straight stitching, and I use it only for piecing, I don't miss any special features.

How about features it does have BUT you find you never use?

I don't use the thread cutter except when I'm applying binding. I like to use Bonnie Hunter's "Leaders and Enders" method while piecing, so I only cut the thread when I'm applying binding. The thread cutter works great with clear polyester thread in the top and cotton thread in the bobbin.

Would you recommend this machine to others and if not, why?

I would absolutely recommend this machine to anyone who does a lot of piecing and like to make a lot of quilts fast -- like 52 Quilts in 52 Weeks!

If your machine suddenly vanished, would you replace it with the exact same machine or a different one? Why?

I would replace this machine with one exactly like it if she were carried off by a tornado. I expect to use this machine until I'm too old to sit upright!

Do you have any special projects you made with this machine you would like to share with us here?

I named this machine "Zippy," because she sews 1500 stitches per minute. I'm from Idaho, and we tend to name all our machinery. My car is named "Signe" because it's the only Swedish girl's name I know that begins with "S" (she's a Saab). My long-arm is named Meggie, because she's a Mega-Quilter.

Do you have any special projects you made with this machine you would like to share with us here?

Any Sewing Machine hints or tips you would like to share?

Buy the optional 1/4" foot.

Optional Juki 1/4"foot

The standard 1/4" foot has a spring-loaded edge that catches in the the edge of the fabric pieces and makes them fray overmuch. (see photo)

Juki Original Foot

If you won the lottery and could add ANY new machine to your collection, which one would it be?

If I won the lottery, I wouldn't replace my Zippy! But I would buy a long-arm with a much larger "harp" so I could quilt more quilts faster!
