Today's Sewist Interview features Liz Schaffner of Moments!
Following Liz's blog, you soon discover she has a fabulous sense of humour along with some pretty nifty, neat sewing skills but not take my word for it, see Liz's interview and find out for yourself! Over to you Liz! :)
I am thrilled to be part of Christine's Sewist series. I discovered her website and wonderful bags last year, when I fell in love with her bag patterns “Bella”& “Olivia”. This was my first ebook and I have to admit that I was a bit worried when I saw that the pattern that 72 pages! Thank goodness there were a lot of pictures & it was well written; So I had no problem making the bag ...Olivia (it is still one of my favorites today) I believe this was the beginning of my bag making obsession. Thank you Christine! (You are welcome Liz! LOL)
When did you start to sew?
Long, long ago! When I was about 14 years old I discovered my love for fabrics & sewing
Who taught you to sew or are you self-taught?
Basically I am self taught (with a lot of trial & error) but I got my first taste of sewing in grade 9 where I learned to make a denim purse....you might remember the kind with the big wooden handles...it was a very basic pattern but I thought it was the hottest thing around! I wish I still had it today...maybe I have to get some of those wooden handles and make a new one.
What sort of things do you like to sew?
Right now I am in a bag making phase but I like to sew anything...I make quilts, home deco items, book covers and all kinds of sewing items....once upon a time I even sewed clothes.
Do you like to use patterns or do you prefer to make it up as you go along?
Mostly I tend to use patterns & tutorials but I always seem to change it somehow ...I can't leave well enough alone!
Have you made something that is your all-time favourite creation? If so, why?
I have two quilts that I just loved making. The first one is “My Floral Windows” quilt (pattern by Dianne Johnston) ....unfortunately it still isn't quilted ... I am saving my pennies to send to to my favourite long-arm quilter Lisa. I loved hand appliqueing each block; friends even hand dyed fabrics for me; this was a true labor of love.
My other favourite quilt is “The Journey of a Quilter (pattern by Leanne Beasley)..I really enjoyed the journey of making this quilt...from picking out the fabrics, to hand stitching each block. This is my girly quilt!
Do you have a favourite fabric type you prefer to work with? Favourite Fabric line or fabric designer?
I love all fabrics!!!...I haven't met a fabric I didn't like ! Some are easier to work with (cottons) and some test my patience (sheer curtains) I would love to experiment more with leather. I got a lovely piece of hot pink faux Ostrich leather from a friend for my birthday and I can't wait to make something special with it. I love bright colors ...polka dots, florals, checks, linens & laces.
Any sewing secrets you would like to share?
Buy all gadgets/notions that make your sewing life easier!! I am a gadget girl! Learn what all the feet on your sewing machine can do and use them! The few seconds it takes to change a foot or needle can make a huge sewing difference. And don't forget to clean your machine after each project...she will thank you for it. (yes, my machine is a she!)
What type of machine/s do you have?
My main sewing machine is a Husqvarna Designer 1. I have a little Brother BC2500 that I use for sewing weekends (it is super light to carry) ….a few years ago my Hubby bought me a featherweight that I just adore. I also have a overlock & a coverlock to alternate my clothes. (the joys of being short & round) Right now I am on the lookout for a good old machine that will sew through all the thick layers of making bags...a portable workhorse!
Do you have any sewing goals?
To use up all the fabric in my cupboards !
Unfortunately yes...but only a few large quilts (5) that need to be basted and then quilted...the part I hate.
When do you find time to sew?
My favourite time is in the wee hours of the morning (between 12 and 3 am) ...when the world is quiet and it is just me in my sewing room with my fabrics....while the rest of the world sleeps...I sew! Actually I am lucky to be able to sew almost whenever my heart desires.
Do you have any other hobbies you like to indulge in?
A few years ago I discovered a love for beading but like most sewers, I tend to tinker in all kinds of crafts...painting, decoupage, scrapbooking anything that lets me be creative with my hands. (except knitting & crocheting...I am ashamed to admit I have never learned how...maybe one day...after I use up all my fabrics I can start collecting wool!)
Anything about you and your family you would like to share?
Originally I am Canadian. I met my Hubby while I was on vacation and I ended up moving to Germany and we have been married for 16 years. We share our home & hearts with a yellow labrador called “Max” ...if it wasn't for him nudging me to go for walks, I would never leave my sewing room!
Thanks Liz! It was FUN learning a bit more about you! :) Don't forget to check out Liz's Blog! MOMENTS!
